The Symposium is separated into two sessions:
- Declaration of Istanbul historical challenges: Making a difference
- Declaration of Istanbul Impact and the road ahead
Twenty-five years after it was imagined, we are back in the city of its launch, an opportune time to take stock. Of the global state of transplant commercialism, organ trafficking and transplant tourism. What was the context for the statement? What has it accomplished? Is it a thought current or an action plan? Is it out-of-date or still relevant? How has transplant commercialism metamorphosed? And what are the contemporary challenges? This symposium will bring together speakers from those involved in the 2008 Istanbul Summit to those currently active as well as its future leadership for reflection, exchange and imagining the future.

As you are probably aware, all forms of human trafficking, including that for organ removal continues to be a problem in many parts of the world. The Declaration of Istanbul Custodian Group (DICG) is most appreciative of your endorsement of the Declaration of Istanbul and seeks to continuously raise awareness and look for effective strategies against organ trafficking.
One of these strategies is the observance of World Day Against Trafficking in Persons which has been declared by the United Nations to be on July 30 every year. In 2023, we started by disseminating some posters for raising awareness (attached and also viewable at the DICG website). This year, we have chosen the theme “Recognizing red flags for organ trafficking”. We would like to seek your active support and these are the ways that you can help:
- Disseminate the poster to all your colleagues and any relevant organizations and/or government agencies in your country.
- Help us identify additional “red flags” (warning signs that a potential donor is at high risk for trafficking) by participating in our campaign.
- Invite all your colleagues to attend the webinar where we will highlight the red flags submitted that we plan to hold on July 30, 2024. We will send you a registration form with details and link for this webinar in the near future.
